Ephesians 2:8-10 reads:

"For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from you; it is the gift of God; it is not from works, so no one may boast. For we are his handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has prepared in advance, that we should live in them" (NAB).

In another translation:

"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them" (ESV).

Works are the fruit (saved 'for' good works, saved in order to do good works) and not the cause of salvation ('not from works', not on account of our works). The work of salvation is done by Another, even God (we, the saved, are his handiwork, his workmanship).
